How employers screen

How Dayforce (Ceridian) actually reads your resume

If the company you're applying to uses Dayforce (Ceridian) to hire, this page explains exactly how the system reads your resume — and what small formatting choices will get your name in front of a human instead of lost.

Parser type

AI-assisted resume parsing integrated into Dayforce's HCM suite. Dayforce (formerly Ceridian Dayforce) is primarily a workforce management platform; its recruiting module handles parsing as a profile-population step rather than a search-optimization step.

Formatting pitfalls

  • Standard pitfalls: multi-column, graphics, non-standard fonts, and contact-in-header issues apply.
  • Dayforce's parser, like other HRIS-first platforms, focuses on field extraction for payroll/HR data continuity rather than keyword search precision.

How recruiter search works

Recruiters use Dayforce's candidate database with keyword and filter search. The platform's strength is in workforce management integration (scheduling, pay, benefits) rather than advanced ATS search.

What parse failure looks like

Incorrect or blank employment history and skills fields in the candidate profile. Manual correction is required before the candidate is properly searchable.

## Summary Table

| ATS | Parser Generation | Columns Safe? | Search Model | Unique Risk |

|---|---|---|---|---|

| Greenhouse | Modern (2024 upgrade) | Partial (80% accurate) | Full-text + AI summary | AI summary based on parsed text only |

| Workday | Proprietary | No | Structured field search | Worst for candidate UX; 20+ field auto-fill |

| Lever | Modern | Partial | Stem-based full-text | Acronyms not expanded |

| Ashby | Modern API | No (avoid 2-column) | Scorecard + full-text | Profile persists for future roles |

| Taleo | Legacy (pre-2010 era) | No | Req Rank + keyword | Paste-text step required; knockout Qs |

| iCIMS | Legacy | No | Keyword pipeline | Used by Amazon; tag-based search |

| SmartRecruiters | Modern NLP | No | AI + keyword | Ambiguous language still trips parser |

| BambooHR | Standard | No | Keyword filter | SMB-focused; less advanced search |

| Workable | Modern | No | Keyword + screening Qs | Manual browse common among recruiters |

| Jobvite | Legacy | No | Boolean text search | Recruiters often browse rather than search |

| Paycom | Integrated HRIS | No | Keyword filter | Workflow-first; limited candidate search |

| SAP SuccessFactors | OCR (Textkernel) | No | Exact keyword + proximity | Picklist fields; Mobile Apply conflicts |

| Oracle HCM | RChilli (some configs) | No | Skills taxonomy | Work history population bug documented 2024 |

| UKG | AI-assisted | No | Keyword + filter | HRIS-first; limited recruiting search |

| Dayforce | AI-assisted | No | Keyword + filter | WFM-first; recruiting is secondary module |

## Universal Rules That Apply to All 15 Systems

1. Single-column layout is the only universally safe choice. Multi-column layouts cause data corruption in every system still operating legacy parsers (Taleo, iCIMS, Workday, Jobvite, Paycom, SuccessFactors, Oracle HCM, UKG, Dayforce, BambooHR).

2. Contact info in the document body, not document headers or footers. At least 25% of ATS systems cannot reliably read header/footer content (iReformat).

3. Text-based PDF or DOCX — never a scanned image or design-tool rasterized export. SAP, Oracle, Taleo, and Workday all explicitly document scanned-image failures.

4. Standard section headings: "Work Experience," "Education," "Skills." Creative headers ("My Journey," "The Toolkit") cause section misclassification in every rule-based and most AI-based parsers (Jobscan).

5. Consistent date format throughout: "Month YYYY" or "MM/YYYY." Year-only dates, apostrophe shorthand, and mixed formats cause experience miscalculation in Taleo, Workday, and SAP SuccessFactors.

6. No skill bar graphics, star ratings, or icon fonts. These are invisible to every parser in this list.
