Job Title: Senior Accountant

Job Summary: As an Atlas Construction Senior Accountant you will be responsible for coordinating, managing and overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, cash management, and compliance activities for the company. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing month-end and year-end close processes, overseeing accounts payable and receivable, supporting project accounting, and providing financial insight to company leadership.

The ideal candidate will have strong construction accounting experience, a deep understanding of job costing principles, and experience developing financial reporting processes in a growing organization. Experience creating and implementing Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting methodologies and construction accounting best practices is highly desirable.

This role represents a unique opportunity to build and shape the accounting function within a growing construction company. Historically, accounting services have been outsourced, and the Senior Accountant will play a key role in establishing internal accounting processes, controls, reporting structures, and best practices that support the company's continued growth.

As the company's sole dedicated accounting professional, this position requires a hands-on individual who is comfortable balancing transactional accounting responsibilities with financial reporting, process development, strategic analysis, and partnership with company leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Manage and perform the day-to-day accounting operations of the company, such as data entry for A/P, A/R, credit card and bank transactions, etc.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Perform month-end and year-end closing procedures.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and bank accounts.
  • Monitor cash flow and prepare cash forecasts.
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures.
  • Assist ownership with budgeting and financial planning.

Construction Accounting

  • Maintain and oversee project job-cost accounting.
  • Track project costs, labor, equipment, subcontractors, and materials.
  • Develop, maintain, and continually improve Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and reporting processes to provide accurate project performance and revenue recognition information.
  • Review contract billings and monitor project profitability.
  • Support project managers with budget-to-actual analysis.
  • Monitor committed costs and change orders.
  • Analyze project performance and identify potential cost overruns.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Oversee accounts payable and vendor relationships.
  • Ensure subcontractor invoices are reviewed and processed accurately.
  • Manage accounts receivable and collections efforts.
  • Monitor aging reports and assist with customer payment issues.
  • Ensure lien waivers and supporting documentation are maintained.

Payroll & Compliance

  • Oversee payroll processing and payroll tax reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Manage annual 1099 preparation and reporting.
  • Maintain accurate records for audits and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, accountants, and tax advisors.

Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Develop and improve accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Implement efficiencies to improve reporting accuracy and timeliness.
  • Support software administration and accounting system improvements.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to management.
  • Establish and document accounting workflows, internal controls, and financial reporting procedures as the company transitions accounting functions in-house.
  • Design and implement Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting processes, job-cost reporting standards, and management reporting tools to support operational decision-making.
  • Serve as the primary accounting and finance resource for ownership and company leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, preferred.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience.
  • 3+ years of construction accounting experience.
