This is not an entry-level mechanic position. Candidates must have at least three years of professional or military hands-on experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing vehicles or heavy equipment.

Experience must include actual repair work on multiple vehicle systems—not only oil changes, tire service, fueling, detailing, or other basic maintenance.

To be considered, your application or résumé should clearly show at least three years of qualifying experience, including the types of vehicles and systems you have worked on.

## Why Join First Student?

We offer:

  • $28.13 per hour
  • An additional $0.25 per hour for each relevant ASE certification
  • Company-paid ASE study materials and exams
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid holidays and vacation
  • Annual tool and gear allowances
  • Boot and prescription safety-glasses allowances
  • Ongoing technical training and career-development opportunities
  • Employee discounts through PerkSpot

## What You Will Do

As a Fleet Technician II, you will perform hands-on maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs that keep our school bus fleet safe, dependable, and ready for service.

Responsibilities include:

  • Diagnosing and repairing brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, and electrical systems
  • Performing preventive maintenance and scheduled fleet inspections
  • Troubleshooting batteries, belts, hoses, filters, fluid systems, and related components
  • Completing DOT inspections and vehicle-safety assessments
  • Using diagnostic equipment and software to identify mechanical and electrical problems
  • Responding to emergency or roadside service needs
  • Completing accurate work orders and documenting labor, repairs, and parts usage
  • Safely moving buses around the facility or between work areas
  • Maintaining personal tools, shop equipment, and a clean working environment
  • Assisting less-experienced technicians when needed

## Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have:

  • At least three years of professional or military hands-on vehicle or heavy-equipment maintenance and repair experience
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing multiple mechanical or electrical vehicle systems
  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
  • A current Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, or the ability and willingness to obtain the required CDL within six months of hire
  • The ability to meet New York State eligibility requirements for operating a school bus.
  • Experience using mechanic hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment
  • A personal mechanic tool set or the ability to build the required tool set
  • The ability to work independently, follow safety procedures, and accurately document completed repairs
  • The ability to lift at least 50 pounds and work underneath vehicles in crouched, kneeling, or prone positions

## Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • Diesel, bus, truck, commercial-fleet, or heavy-equipment repair experience
  • Vocational or technical training in automotive or diesel technology
  • ASE certifications
  • Experience performing DOT inspections
  • Previous school bus or passenger-vehicle maintenance experience
  • Relevant military vehicle-maintenance experience

## Important Safety Requirements

This is a safety-sensitive position. Employment is subject to applicable Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing requirements, including testing for cannabis.
