Position Overview

This role leads the design and delivery of employee benefits, leave administration, wellbeing programming, and retirement plan oversight for a growing, multi-site organization. Partnering closely with HR site leaders and internal wellbeing champions, the Benefits & Wellbeing Manager oversees benefits and leave staff and is accountable for self-funded health plan support, 401(k) governance, open enrollment, employee communications, and compliant leave and accommodation practices across a diverse, bilingual workforce. We are seeking a hands-on HR leader who combines deep California leave knowledge, benefits expertise, strong judgment, and fluent English/Spanish communication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set and lead the organization's benefits strategy across health & welfare, retirement, wellness, and self-funded medical programs.
  • Manage annual open enrollment end to end, including carrier and vendor oversight, broker partnerships, and RFP processes.
  • Oversee 401(k) governance and compliance, including Form 5500 filings, plan audits, and nondiscrimination testing.
  • Administer federal and state leave programs, FMLA, CFRA, PDL, and the ADA interactive process, across multiple states.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to third-party leave administrators on claim handling and return-to-work clearances.
  • Maintain full compliance with ACA, ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, and DOL regulations.
  • Design and deliver wellbeing programming, from health campaigns and wellness events to engagement surveys.
  • Manage employee recognition programs and an education/scholarship program.
  • Supervise leave-of-absence and benefits staff, and build benefits fluency across the broader People team.
  • Develop benefits dashboards and reporting to inform leadership decision-making.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience concentrated in enterprise-level benefits and wellbeing.
  • Demonstrated multi-state benefits administration with command of state-specific leave law.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, able to read, write, speak, and translate fluently (required).
  • Proficiency with HRIS platforms and advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, written, verbal, and public-speaking skills.
  • Solid working knowledge of federal, state, and local employment law, with particular depth in California leave.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with sound judgment and discretion handling confidential information.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively across departments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience administering self-funded health plans.
  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now.
  • Master's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
