The Digital Editor is responsible for curating, optimizing, and driving engagement across the Massachusetts cluster's websites, social media channels, mobile applications, and email products. Working in tandem with the Executive Editor and newsroom staff, your primary focus will be to convert casual readers into loyal subscribers by delivering timely, relevant, and highly engaging content.

  • Identify and subscribe to network and company-wide stories that will augment local reporting and provide a comprehensive news product
  • Clean and optimize digital content, while also occasionally writing original stories for both the web and the next day’s print publication
  • Refine article headlines, excerpts, and tags both before and after publication to maximize search engine visibility (SEO) and social media value
  • Enhance story presentation by reviewing, cropping, and editing photos, and embedding digital elements such as video, maps, timelines, social media posts, and graphic elements
  • Monitor real-time analytics platforms to discover traffic patterns, evaluate audience needs, and advise the Executive Editor and reporting staff on actionable content strategies
  • Partner closely with editors and reporters to ensure digital best practices - such as hyperlinks, proper tagging, and rich media - are consistently executed across the newsroom

What you will bring:

  • A college degree or equivalent experience, with prior news media experience highly preferred and a proven track record of editing, curating, or writing news content for digital platforms
  • Exceptional grammar, spelling, and editing skills, along with a deep understanding of AP style, strong news judgment, and awareness of the Boston and Massachusetts communities
  • Multiplatform versatility with experience writing and formatting content seamlessly for desktop, mobile, app, and print formats
  • The ability to communicate effectively and professionally across departments, resolving workflow conflicts gracefully and working collegially with co-workers and the public
  • A steady, focused approach in intense, fast-breaking news situations while handling varied tasks within tight time frames
  • Familiarity with digital analytics tools and a strong desire to use data to inform daily editorial and presentation decisions
