How Workday actually ranks your application

If you're applying to a big company, your resume is almost certainly going through Workday first. Workday is used by more than 39% of Fortune 500 employers, per Jobscan's 2025 ATS report. Here's what happens to your resume once it lands there — in plain English.

1. It parses you into boxes

Workday breaks your resume into fields: name and contact, work history (title, company, dates, bullets), education, skills, certifications, languages. If you use a two-column layout with dates in the right column, those dates can get dropped. Photos and icons get stripped. Custom section headers with icons? Often lost.

2. It matches keywords

Workday matches your resume against the posting's required and preferred skills. It uses stemming — so "engineer," "engineered," and "engineering" all match. You don't need to stuff all three in.

3. It ranks — it doesn't reject

This is the big one. Workday does not auto-reject by default. That famous "75% of resumes are rejected by ATS" stat? It came from a defunct company called Preptel that never showed its methodology. Jobscan's 2024 analysis found 92% of Fortune 500 ATS configurations don't auto-reject. Workday ranks. The recruiter still sees you.

What moves your rank:

  1. Skills match (keyword + stemming)
  2. Years of experience (parsed from your dates)
  3. Education match (degree + field)
  4. Internal referral flag (huge lift — can't be beat)
  5. Saved searches the recruiter set up

What this means for you

  1. Your resume layout matters more than your keywords. A misparsed resume loses more than a missing synonym.
  2. Single column. Standard headings. No photos.
  3. Referrals beat everything. If you know someone at the company, ask them to refer you.

What Jobeezy does for Workday postings

We format your resume so it survives Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, and SuccessFactors without getting mangled. Our fit score is tuned to what Workday actually ranks on, so when we submit, you land higher in the recruiter's list. We also flag Workday postings over 60 days old as likely ghosts — because Workday auto-closes at 90 days, and a listing still live at day 60 with no recruiter activity is almost always dead.
