Responsibilities
Position Summary
The Floor Technician is responsible for the deep cleaning, restoration, and ongoing maintenance of all hard-surface and carpeted flooring throughout assigned areas at FLL. This is a specialized janitorial role focused on stripping, waxing, buffing, shampooing, and refinishing floors to maintain a clean, safe, and professional environment. Work is performed on assigned shifts, often overnight or during low-traffic periods, and may span terminal, office, restroom, break room, and back-of-house spaces, including secured and airside areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Strip, seal, wax, and buff hard-surface floors (VCT, tile, concrete, terrazzo, etc.) using floor machines and appropriate chemicals.
- Shampoo, extract, spot-treat, and dry carpeted areas.
- Operate and maintain floor care equipment: auto-scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, carpet extractors, and wet/dry vacuums.
- Move and return furniture as needed to access floor areas.
- Mix and apply cleaning chemicals safely and according to label and SDS instructions.
- Set out wet-floor signage and follow all safety protocols to protect the public and staff.
- Inspect completed work to ensure quality standards are met.
- Perform general janitorial duties as assigned when not on floor projects.
- Report equipment malfunctions, supply needs, and safety hazards to the supervisor.
- Maintain a clean, organized equipment and supply storage area.
- Comply with all airport, TSA, and company security requirements while working in secured areas.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- 1+ year of commercial floor care experience preferred (stripping, waxing, carpet care).
- Working knowledge of floor care chemicals, equipment, and safe operating procedures.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a SIDA badge, including passing a TSA Security Threat Assessment and a 10-year criminal history records check (CHRC).
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for the duration of the shift.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and push/pull floor equipment.
- Ability to work overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts as scheduled.
- Comfortable working around cleaning chemicals and wet surfaces.
- Working Conditions
- Work performed indoors in a high-traffic airport environment, including secured/airside areas.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, noise from equipment, and variable temperatures.
- SIDA badge required; candidate must clear all badging and security requirements before working in restricted areas.
