Material Scientist (New Kensington, PA)

The Material Scientist will utilize materials, chemistry and compliance knowledge in working with R&D teams to ensure product safety and design world class Sleep & Respiratory Care (S&RC) products for our customers.

Your role:

  • Review requirements and develop test plans that provide key design and development insights and demonstrate material safety; execute this testing both personally and using test technicians.
  • Perform materials assessments and manage testing needed for product development and design changes including long-term accelerated aging studies to determine product material stability.
  • Communicate and coordinate testing needs with internal and external testing facilities.
  • Assess material failures and coordinate corrective actions with project teams.
  • Scout and select new polymer materials & processing/finishing technologies which make new designs and functions in Philips S&RC products possible.
  • Learn from and adhere to internal quality manual (Quality System Procedures, Work Instructions, Forms).
  • Reporting to the Materials Manager, you will work cross-functionally and collaborate with R&D, NPI, CRO’s, Regulatory Agencies internal/external scientists and other stakeholders.
  • May require travel up to 10%.

You're the right fit if:

  • You have a minimum of 1 year of experience in Materials Science, with a focus on product/ process development and testing in relation to polymer materials.
  • Your skills include:
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory testing and analysis of chemical and physical properties of materials for use in medical devices (strongly preferred).
  • Strong root cause analysis experience and the ability to perform failure mode investigations to support the CAPA process.
  • An understanding of the ISO 10993 series of standards for materials analysis and risk assessments, with knowledge of FDA, EU MDR and global medical device regulations, requirements, and standards (preferred).
  • You have a Bachelor’s/MS Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering or similar disciplines.
  • You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position.
  • You’re able to collaborate with cross-functional teams, external partners, and companies.

The pay range for this position in New Kensington, PA is $74,000 to $117,000.
