Job Description
The Role:
We are looking for a talented and motivated candidate to join our team in our journey of defining and executing the backbone of our company's future—the next generation Vehicle Electrical and Software Architecture.
The Mechatronics Infrastructure organization is looking for a Staff System Engineer who will define and lead the development of the in-vehicle Ethernet network across all of GM’s vehicle platforms. This is a very critical and central role in which you will lead the team in developing a comprehensive full-stack Ethernet network, from the data-link layer through the application layer. You will work closely with stakeholders across our architecture, hardware, and software teams in ensuring end-to-end system perspectives are considered in architecture and hardware selection decisions.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
- Champion enterprise in-vehicle Ethernet communication strategy and roadmap in close partnership with our product and core technology organization.
- Design and develop in-vehicle Ethernet systems, including network architecture, topology, and communication protocols across all networking layers of the OSI model.
- Lead definition of Ethernet system requirements, validation strategy, and triage/debug of network-related issues across hardware, software, and test infrastructure.
- Support testing and validation initiatives to ensure proper functionality and performance; support and partner with the Electrical Systems Architecture team to develop and launch network performance dashboards.
- Monitor network health continuously and incorporate learnings and trends into Ethernet system strategy and requirements.
- Work in lockstep with semiconductor teams to ensure system-level perspective in selecting Ethernet hardware components and driving semiconductor roadmaps.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of Ethernet systems into the overall vehicle architecture.
- Lead team to continuously improve processes, methodologies, and tools--especially, realizing and going live with automated generation and release of network configuration.
- Stay up to date with the latest industry standards, protocols, and trends related to in-vehicle Ethernet systems.
- Incorporate best practices and emerging technologies into system design and development.
- Actively represent GM in relevant working groups within IEEE 802 and Open Alliance.
- Lead the development of Ethernet system and software stack improvements for GM's next-generation SDV architectures. Examples include, but are not limited to: Differentiated Services in 10BASE-T1S networks, synchronized distributed execution and real-time communication latency reduction, communication and time synchronization redundancy strategies, system and software architecture for RCP (Open Alliance TC18) use cases, and reduced latency footprint of cybersecurity solutions for Ethernet.
- Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline.
- 8 or more years of experience planning, designing, and implementing complex computer networks.
- Expert level knowledge of computer networking protocols, network architecture, and communication standards, including automotive Ethernet technologies and networking stacks like TCP/IP and SOME/IP.
- Advanced knowledge of the internals of the data-link layer components (for example, switch internals and communication software stack).
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) solution (for example, time synchronization and traffic prioritization/shaping).
- Knowledge and end-to-end awareness of the hardware and software components (PHYs, switches, hardware interfaces, connectors, cables, software stack, protocols) that make up a network in the automotive domain.
- Advanced knowledge of internals of Ethernet switch behavior.
- Knowledge of and experience with software development lifecycle and testing methodologies, network trouble-shooting. simulation and analysis tools, and programming languages.
People Skills:
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to see and own the end-to-end perspective, identify and evaluate multiple alternative approaches, and driving decisions.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to, for a wide variety of audiences, adapt the explanation and motivation of complex technical concepts.

- Evidence of mentoring and developing others into technical experts.
- Evidence of ability to master new technical areas and relentless desire for knowledge.
- Masters degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline.
- Advanced knowledge of embedded software infrastructure (for example, AUTOSAR or other real-time embedded infrastructure software solutions).
- Experience with deploying MACsec, key agreement protocols, and other security-related networking functions.
- Experience with 10BASE-T1S and 100/1000BASE-T1, with connections across the Automotive Ethernet ecosystem.
- Experience with Open Alliance solutions (e.g., TC10/14, TC18).
- Knowledge of and experience with real-time operating systems, embedded software architectures, and AUTOSAR.
- Experience with Serializer/Deserializer technologies and MIPI standards.
